Racers took the Crossodromo Le Dune circuit in Riola Sardo on the island of Sardegna in Italy for round four of the FIM Motocross World Championship, April 5-6. Former winners used their veteran experience to shine in the sandy conditions, with Romain Febvre and Kay de Wolf claiming the weekend’s overall victories.

Race one of the MXGP division was all about Lucas Coenen. After starting second to Ducati’s Jeremy Seewer, the Factory Red Bull KTM rider made his way to the lead on lap one. The Belgian rider is still a rookie in the 450cc class but looked comfortable up front and used his sand experience to lead the entire first moto. A small tip-over on the final lap couldn’t deter his efforts, as he’d opened up a 12-second gap to second place.

A win in race one marked the first moto victory for Coenen. The two factory Fantics of Glenn Coldenhoff and Andrea Bonacorsi rounded out the podium, with Febvre and Tim Gajser taking fourth and fifth, respectively. Febvre and Gajser both suffered poor starts but fought their way through the field to finish inside the top five.

Race two saw Seewer again take the holeshot while Coenen and Bonacorsi hit the deck in the first turn. Seewer led momentarily as Jeffrey Herlings made his way to the front. Herlings made his return to racing in Sardegna and only scored one point in the opening race. With a point to prove, he led the next three laps before eventually finishing seventh in the moto and 15th overall.

JK Yamaha’s Isak Gifting took over the lead from Herlings but was quickly hunted down by the championship duo of Febvre and Gajser. Febvre eventually made the pass for the lead on lap seven, and the two career rivals battled it out for the second half of the moto.

The race was still up for grabs going into the final turn, but Febvre held on for the win, just six-tenths clear of Gajser. A 4-1 score marked Febvre’s 50th career race win and earned him the overall, with Coldenhoff’s 2-3 putting him second. Gajser rounded out the podium in third with 5-2 scores but still leads Febvre in the championship by 34 points.

“To win is always nice, I won’t complain,” Febvre said. “I didn’t even know when my last win was. I just try to stay consistent and avoid mistakes, especially this early in the season. Starting from P20 today, I had to push hard. In the second race, I was more aggressive early on, found a good rhythm, and just rode smoothly. It felt like a practice session, as I felt super good the whole way through. Lommel and Riola are probably the toughest tracks on the calendar, so to battle and win it here is not too bad for 33 years old.”

MX2
The first race of the MX2 class saw an all-out battle between two sand specialists—Red Bull KTM’s Sacha Coenen and Nestaan Husqvarna’s Kay de Wolf. Coenen grabbed the holeshot and rocketed off to the lead in the first half of the race. The defending champ, de Wolf, ran second and made his move for the lead on lap 13.

Coenen stayed in the hunt but crashed spectacularly shortly after being passed. This crash took the pressure off de Wolf and allowed him to take the opening win over Camden McLellan and Simon Laengenfelder. Coenen remounted for fifth ahead of points leader Liam Everts.

Race two was another battle between the MX2 heavyweights. Former champ Andrea Adamo got out front to the early lead with de Wolf once again closely in tow. The number one Husqvarna passed for the lead on lap four, but Adamo wasn’t finished yet. After six laps at the front, de Wolf went down and handed the lead back to the Italian native, Adamo.

The KTM rider proceeded to put de Wolf nine seconds down as the race wound down. But on the final lap, de Wolf’s charge paid off as he passed for the lead and sealed the overall with 1-1 results. With double wins, he now reclaims the points lead by eight over Laengenfelder, while Everts drops to third.

Adamo still claimed second in the race but went 4-2 for third overall. Triumph’s Camden McLellan finished on the podium once again in race two and earned second overall with 2-3 results.

“That last lap was crazy,” said de Wolf. “Andrea [Adamo] missed the table, and I almost landed on him. Our heart rates were sky-high! But I went inside on the final corner, hoped for the best, and took the win. Going 1-1 today after a tough one in Saint Jean d’Angely is amazing. I struggled in France with the last gate picks. But we bounced back big this weekend, got the red plate back, and now I’m just going to enjoy the tripleheader and do my best.” CN
