The United States Marine Corps wants to remind the public of the previously announced plans to close the popular off-road riding area in Southern California, the Johnson Valley Shared Use Area, in order to conduct military training during the following time periods.

The first of three planned closures has already gone into effect, which started on August 13 and is expected to last through August 27. The two other planned closures will take place on February 12-24, 2027, and August 13-26, 2027.
The closure periods include the necessary time required to complete pre- and post-training inspections of those lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
When recreating or off-roading in Johnson Valley, visitors are reminded to observe the base boundaries and be aware of the Shared Use Area’s status. Military training is conducted within Combat Center boundaries year-round, including ranges acquired during the land expansion that border the Shared Use Area and the Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area.
When the Shared Use Area is closed for military training, the adjacent Johnson Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area remains open to the public. The Marine Corps will continue to implement robust public outreach to ensure the public is informed of the temporary change in land use.
