The FIM Motocross World Championship visited the Crossodromo Internacional de Agueda in Portugal for the seventh round of the 2025 season. Downpour conditions thoroughly soaked the track, resulting in muddy conditions for every moto. MXGP points leader Tim Gajser chose to sit out this round after injuring his shoulder during round six, which left the MXGP title chase wide open. Both the MXGP and MX2 divisions were dominated with 1-1 scores achieved by Lucas Coenen and Andrea Adamo, respectively.

After claiming 1-1 victories at round six in Switzerland, Lucas Coenen continued his momentum with another win during Saturday’s qualifying race in Portugal. The MXGP rookie then grabbed the holeshot in Sunday’s race one and got out front in the muddy first moto. Coenen led all of the first race and navigated the slop with veteran experience. The Factory Red Bull KTM rider crossed the line first to take the opening win, his third race win in a row.
Romain Febvre stayed close and repeatedly tried to pass Coenen but never managed to make a move stick. He took second and took over the championship lead in the process. Honda’s Ruben Fernandez battled for the final spot on the podium with Fantic’s Brian Bogers. Bogers took over the position but eventually fell and dislocated his shoulder, allowing Fernandez to slip by and claim third.

Race two looked like more of the same as rain proceeded to fall mid-moto and further deteriorate the racing surface. Coenen again crossed the holeshot line first, with Febvre and Fernandez hot on his heels. Despite their good starts, neither contender could deter the rookie, Coenen. He once again led all of race two and fended off multiple attacks from Febvre late in the moto.

With 1-1 finishes, Coenen swept the weekend and further extended his win streak to four races in a row. Febvre claimed second on the day with 2-2 results and now leads the championship standings by 25 points. Fernandez used a pair of thirds for third overall and landed his first podium of the year.
“It was a really good weekend overall,” Coenen said. “I didn’t expect this kind of result coming in, especially with the mud. I struggled a lot here last year. I knew the starts would be key, and I managed to get them today. Romain [Febvre] was pushing hard the whole time, and I got a bit nervous, but on the last lap he made a mistake, and I didn’t see him anymore. That was probably my best lap of the race.”

MX2
The MX2 division is still up for grabs, with three riders duking it out for 250cc supremacy. The former MX2 Champion, Andrea Adamo, kicked things off on Saturday with the qualifying race win and rolled that confidence into Sunday’s race. Liam Everts started race one with the holeshot but quickly fell on lap one and was overtaken by Sacha Coenen. The first race proved to be one of attrition, as falls and mistakes hindered nearly everyone on the track.

Points leader Kay de Wolf fell while running second and eventually came home in third. Finally, Coenen found himself stuck in the mud late in the race, which allowed Saturday’s winner, Adamo, to sneak by for the win. The KTM rider led Simon Laengenfelder and de Wolf to the line. Conditions looked much better for race two as the track crew prepped almost all of the rain-soaked track. Laengenfelder shot out to the early lead but fell on lap one and had his work cut out for him.

After Laengenfelder’s crash, the two front-runners from race one, Coenen and Adamo, once again found themselves at the front. By the halfway mark, Adamo made his bid for the lead and passed his KTM teammate for the top spot. He crossed the line four seconds clear of second place and achieved 1-1 wins to sweep the weekend. The win also saw him gain crucial points in the championship, now third and only 10 points back from the leader. De Wolf’s pair of thirds earned him second on the day and allowed him to maintain control of the red plate.

Laengenfelder made his way to fourth in race two and rounded out the overall podium in third. He sits second in the championship, four points behind de Wolf.
“I rode really well this weekend,” said Adamo. “It was amazing, no mistakes, and the starts were strong, especially yesterday. That put me in a good position for today, which was important because the conditions, especially in the first race, were wild. The second one wasn’t as bad, but still tricky. To go 1-1-1 for the first time in my career is just incredible. I’m super happy with the result.” CN
