Preview: Indoor Trials Finale
| March 17, 2001
The final round of the World Championship Indoor Trials Series will take place tomorrow evening in the Palacio de los Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid in Spain. The titleis pretty much wrapped up for Brit Dougie Lampkin (who rides an HRC Montesa), but the “big fighting” will occur for second place, between Spaniards Marc Freixa (on a Otyan-Sherco) and Marc Colomer (on a Gas Gas). The young Freixa currently holds the position with 143 points, but Colomer is only three points back at 140, and he’ll have to win in Madrid (for the first time) to overtake Freixa.
“I have to ride very good in Madrid to be the Second in the World Championship because Freixa is in a good moment, and I’m sure that he is going to be, minimum, on the podium,” Colomer said. “For this, I must win in Madrid to find my objective.”
The other riders of the series would also like to win the last round of the season because Lampkin won nine events, and only Gas Gas rider Steve Colley managed to beat the five-time World Champion.
Beta rider Albert Cabestany, one of the rookies of the year, said, “In Madrid, I would like to win, obviously. I know the difficulties that I could find because Freixa and Colomer are fighting for the second position. But I’ll try to have a good ride to succeed in my first win in the Indoor Trial World Championship, and do it with the support of my people, it could be fantastic.”
The last rider in the standings is Japanese Takahisa Fujinami (on a Montesa-HRC), with 112 points, and his objective is the same – to win.
General Standings (After 10 rounds of 11): 1. Doug Lampkin; (Montesa-HRC) 197; 2. Marc Freixa (Otyan-Sherco) 143; 3. Marc Colomer (Gas-Gas) 140; 4. Albert Cabestany (Beta) 132; 5. Steve Colley (Gas-Gas) 128; 6. Takahisa Fujinami (Montesa-HRC) 112.
