Montesa Cota’s Dougie Lampkin clinched his fourth successive World Trials Championship last weekend in France. But when the series got to Italy for the penultimate round this weekend, his rivals showed him no respect, sending the Briton to a fifth place finish on Saturday, the first day of the event. Lampkin rebounded with a win on Sunday.

Saturday’s surprise winner was Spaniard Albert Cabestany, the Beta rider who beat Honda’s Takahisa Fujinami in a fastest time tie break after both had dropped 10 points. Montesa’s Marc Colomer was third.

Riding his Montesa Cota 315R like the champion he is, Lampkin dropped three points on Sunday, easily besting Cabestany’s 12, with Fujinami third at 18.

Fujinami’s finishes consolidated his second place in the championship behind Lampkin with the two Andorran rounds on September 1 &2 remaining. After 18 of 20 rounds Lampkin is the champion with 339, while Fujinami has 260 and Colomer 252.
