MotoGP Silly Season Explodes (Updated)

UPDATE FROM February 9, 2026

Word on the ground in Malaysia at the recent MotoGP test was that MotoGP’s factory teams could have their 2027, yes, 2027, lineups signed and confirmed before race one of the 2026 season. The likes of Pedro Acosta (Ducati), Fabio Quartararo (Honda) and Jorge Martin (Yamaha) did little to deny the previous week’s news that they could be leaving their current team and manufacturer.

Alex Marquez, Valencia MotoGP Test, 18 November 2025
Will we see Alex Marquez in KTM orange in 2027?

And there was a further rumor at Sepang. “Everybody’s talking to everybody,” confirmed Honda HRC Castrol Team Manager Alberto Puig. First, Alex Marquez is weighing up an offer to join KTM’s factory team to replace the outgoing Acosta. Last year’s runner-up also has an offer to stay at Gresini but repeatedly indicated a preference to ride for a factory team.

Luca Marini, Sepang MotoGP Test, 3 February 2026
After doing much of the development work on the Honda RC213V, Luca Marini faces an uncertain future at HRC with the imminent arrival of Quartararo in 2027.

“I’d say the most solid [option] is Gresini,” said the younger Marquez brother. “I know the team, I know everything. And the emotional side that is important for a rider is there. But if there’s one year you can take risks, it’s next year. Because nobody knows which [factory] will be the best one. So, I will see. For that reason, everything in the market is quite crazy, because everybody wants the top riders.”

The Gresini rider is sure his future will be decided when the first lights go out in early March 2026.

Francesco Bagnaia, Marco Bezzecchi, Malaysian MotoGP 31 October 2024
Pecco Bagnaia (right) is rumored to be joining close friend Marco Bezzecchi (left) at Aprilia in 2027.

“Before the first race, I will decide,” he said. “I will have [it] clear what I will do in ’27. But at the moment, I’m quite calm. I know which options we have on the table. But I’m still working on that. If I can decide before the test in Thailand, I will do it. If not, I will wait a little bit. But before the first race, I want to have my future closed.”

Another name popping up in the rumor mill was Pecco Bagnaia. As the Italian is on course to lose his seat in Ducati’s factory team, he’s looking elsewhere, with rumors of being heavily linked to Aprilia to replace the Yamaha-bound Martin.

“It’s clear that a season like last year can put you in the wrong side [of negotiations],” he admitted. “I have many opportunities [on the table], and we just need to decide.

“We are living in a world that is always super-fast. So, you need to be quick. Jorge Lorenzo said a correct thing; you are only remembered from your last races. It’s like this, and honestly, I think it’s correct.”

The following is an update from February 3, 2026

MotoGP testing only recently got underway, but on-track events have taken a backseat as silly season intensified, with Fabio Quartararo poised for a sensational switch to Honda in 2027, while Pedro Acosta is in line for a seat in Ducati’s factory team.

Fabio Quartararo, Valencia MotoGP Test, 18 November 2025
Fabio Quartararo looks all but set to move to the factory Honda squad for 2027.

While Quartararo insisted “nothing is signed,” sources close to HRC confirmed to Cycle News the Frenchman is the favorite to lead MotoGP’s most successful constructor into the new 850cc era.

Honda has been known to be on the lookout for an elite MotoGP name since Marc Marquez’s departure at the close of 2023. It would have taken on Jorge Martin for 2026 had the Spaniard been able to successfully exit his Aprilia contract last year.

It could mark a statement of intent from the Japanese brand as it works to reverse the slump it found itself in for much of this decade. Since Marquez’s departure, its MotoGP operation has received increased manpower. Now it could have a rider to match its ambition, following the Quartararo news reported on Motorsport.com last Thursday, January 29.

In truth, Quartararo’s mind appeared to have been made up in October last year. The 26-year-old was far from impressed by the early version of Yamaha’s new V4 YZR-M1. Asked during the Malaysian Grand Prix what it would take to stay with Yamaha beyond this year, he stated, “I need to feel that it’s a winning bike.”

Pushed on whether this was a realistic goal for Yamaha, technical director Max Bartolini told Cycle News last November, “It’s difficult to say if this will be possible.”

Pedro Acosta, Sepang MotoGP Test, 2 February 2026
As does Pedro Acosta, but he’ll be off to Ducati with Marc Marquez next year.

Asked for comment, an official Yamaha spokesman told Cycle News, “We do not intend to comment on media speculation. We continue to work hard and in full harmony with Fabio, fully focused on our shared objectives.”

Indeed, it appears Yamaha is swiftly lining up a replacement. Martin has emerged as its chief target, aiming to end his Aprilia nightmare. Despite injury plaguing his title defense, the 2024 World Champion has still to feel at home aboard the RS-GP.

In his repeated absence last year, he also found himself demoted to a number two in the team, behind Marco Bezzecchi, who confirmed a two-year extension with Aprilia for 2027 and 2028 on Monday. Aprilia is also unable to match the kind of offer Yamaha—potentially freed of Quartararo’s hefty salary—could muster.

A member of Martin’s management team didn’t rule out the link. “We are understanding the best options for our riders [currently],” they told Cycle News.

Despite the prevailing optimism surrounding KTM in 2026, Pedro Acosta also refused to rule out his signing for Ducati. Those rumors have picked up pace in recent days, with Acosta now fully expected to partner Marc Marquez in factory red in 2027. A source close to Acosta’s camp conceded, “Changing teams in an option, yes,” to Cycle News.

It’s also believed Maverick Vinales could be in line to replace him in KTM’s factory team. KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer has stressed the importance of the Catalan last spring when he demonstrated to engineers a different way of extracting the most from the bike.CN
