Scotsman Shaun Simpson claimed the overall win at the Grand Prix of Belgium at the Lommel Circuit, August 2. Simpson, a sand specialist, took full advantage of the soft terrain and rolling whoops, and came away with a 1-1 sweep of the MXGP class. The KTM rider worked his way into the lead in both motos and survived a late-race fall in the second moto to take the first sweep of his career.

Second overall with a 2-2 went to Honda’s Gautier Paulin, while championship leader Romain Febvre ended up third overall with a 3-3 and a couple of crashes.

Febvre still maintains a solid points lead in the championship over Paulin, 547-463.

Defending champ Antonio Cairoli did not compete. The KTM rider is still mending from an injury. Suzuki’s Clement Desalle also did not ride. Daselle will miss the rest of the season with a shoulder injury.

In the MX2 class, Dixon Racing Kawasaki’s Max Anstie came up big at Lommel. The Brit won both motos and pulled a large amount of points on the riders ahead of him in the series, including last year’s champ Jordi Tixier, Jeremy Seewer and Valentin Guillod. But Anstie is still seventh in the series but gaining ground.

KTM rider Pauls Jonass is the new championship leader. The rider from Latvia went 2-2 at Lommel, overtaking former leader Jeffrey Herlings who is sidelined for the rest of the series after suffering an injury last week. Tim Gajser (5-7 on the day) trails Jonass by just four points.

Petar Petrov went 3-4 for third overall.
