In a dry 20-lap race two Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) completed a double at Portimao, winning by 5.416 seconds from Davide Giugliano (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati WSB) and having time to wave at the fans before crossing the line. It was his 25th WSB win and his tenth of 2015.
In third place Leon Haslam (Aprilia Racing Team – Red Devils) had a confidence-boosting podium but it was an eventual shocker for Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) who looked like he would be second for much of the race, before his pace dropped right off and he had to settle for eighth place, almost 20 seconds from his tea-mate Rea.
Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati WSB) was fourth.
The second race at Portimao had a re-run of the top four riders out front at the very start but this time around race one winner Rea hit the front on lap six, then almost immediately ran off track to drop to third place.
Giugliano stayed in contention for the early laps, in the lead at points as he, Sykes, Rea and Davies put clear early water between themselves and the two factory Aprilias.
Davies’s pace dropped of somewhat as the second race unfolded, with Haslam clawing him back at near half race distance.
Rea passed Sykes on lap ten, to go second, then took the lead at half race distance.
Sykes was also past Giugliano, trying to chase down his team-mate with 12 laps gone.
He was re-passed as his pace dropped, with Giugliano going inside at the middle hairpin.
Haslam was back in contention for a podium with three laps to go, with Sykes into the mid-1’45s, then the 1’46s after Davies also passed him. His final lap was a 1’50.
Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda WSB) and Sylvain Guintoli (Pata Honda WSB) finished fifth and sixth respectively, with Jordi Torres (Aprilia Racing Team – Red Devils) seventh.
Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) was 13th and once again Leon Camier (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) had to retire.
