McFarlane was a successful FIM Motocross World Championship racer and enjoyed many victories in the MX2 division. In 2005 he finished the World Championship in second overall, and in the same year, raced several AMA Motocross Nationals earning two podium finishes.
In 2006 McFarlane signed with the Rockstar/WBR/Suzuki team and begun racing in the US full time. A string of injuries and back luck had him on the sidelines for much of 2006 and the 2007 Supercross season, but the Aussie was a regular top-ten finisher in the Lites division of the AMA Motocross Championship in 2007 and 2008. His best finish in the US Nationals was fifth overall at Unadilla in 2007.
McFarlane was 32 years old, a father, and had been racing the Australian Motocross Championship in his home country.
Victoria Police are currently investigating the on-track incident that tragically claimed the motocross racer’s life.
