Hancock Takes Over

| August 19, 2002

Former World Individual Speedway Champion Greg Hancock took over the reins in the 2002 AMA National Championship Speedway Series with a win in the A Final during round two at Fast Fridays Speedway in Auburn, California, on August 16.

“Flyin” Mike Faria, who led in points after the regularly scheduled heats, finished second in the A Final. “Bronco” Billy Janniro was third and first-round winner Billy “The Bullet” Hamill was fourth after crashing during the night. Hamill, who opted to visit the local hospital immediately after the round to get checked for the possibility of a mild concussion as well as a sore neck, saw former Exide teammate Hancock take over the series point lead at 36-35. Janniro dropped to third place just two points off the pace at 34. Faria sits in fourth place with 28 points, while “Fast Eddie” Castro, who finished fourth in the A Final at round one, sits in fifth place with 24 points.

The third and final round, which will determine the AMA National Speedway Championship, will also be held in Auburn on Friday September 20th.
