Bradley Ray (McAMS Yamaha) and Kyle Ryde (Nitrous Coin Nitrous Competitions Racing) visited the top step of the podium during the three-race ZYN British Superbike at Oulton Park, July 31-August 2. Race one was held on Saturday, when Ray emerged the winner, while races two and three were held on Sunday, with Ryde sweeping the day.
It was a multi-bike battle for the win on Saturday. After several lead changes, Ray held the edge to the finish, while Ryde pushed Leon Haslam (Moto Rapido Racing) for second place over the final laps, making his move on lap 16. Despite Haslam trying to regain the advantage, he had to settle for third place behind the reigning champion at the checkered flag.
Storm Stacey (Bathams AJN Racing Ducati) equaled his best result of the season in fourth place, but there was disappointment for Max Cook (AJN Steelstock bimota), as he dramatically crashed out at high speed at Cascades with three laps to go while holding fifth place in the pack.
Scott Redding (Hager PBM Racing Team) claimed fifth place ahead of Ryan Vickers (Honda Racing UK), who held off Joe Talbot (AJN Steelstock bimota) and his teammate Jason O’Halloran. Christian Iddon (Sencat Racing Yamaha) and Glenn Irwin (Nitrous Coin Nitrous Competitions Racing) completed the top 10.
In Sunday’s race two, Ray launched into the lead ahead of Redding, Vickers and Stacey, with Ryde holding eighth place on the opening lap as the defending champion had to work his way through the pack.
Ray and Redding were setting the pace, with Vickers holding third, but Josh Brookes crashed at Druids on lap seven, and with gravel on track, the BMW Safety Car was deployed.
The pack lined up ready for the restart with Ray leading Redding, Ryde, Vickers and Cook, and when the race continued, Ryde instantly attacked to dive down the inside of Redding into Old Hall.
Ducati-mounted Ryde then had Ray in his sights, and he made a move at Island on the penultimate lap; the McAMS Yamaha rider tried to fight back instantly, but his rival had the edge and was able to hold him off to the checkered flag.
Redding was frustrated with third but completed the podium, as he was able to break Vickers and Cook.
In the final race of the weekend, Ray got another characteristically lightning start to lead Redding and Ryde into Old Hall for the first time, as Cook made a move on Vickers for fourth place on the second lap.
There was an early crash out of the race for Irwin, but at the front Redding grabbed the lead with a move on Ray a lap later.
Redding was then holding the advantage at the front of the field, but Ryde was pushing Ray, and he made another determined move on lap five to take second place.
Leon Haslam, meanwhile, was also working his way through the pack as he bounced back from a race-two crash, and soon he was up to sixth place with a move on Vickers at Shell Oils corner.
At the front, Redding was holding the advantage until the Hager PBM Racing Team rider had a small moment at Hislops, and that gave Ryde the momentum into Knickerbrook to strike and take the lead.
Ryde held off Redding to the finish with Ray in third place, while behind him Vickers was able to battle off Haslam and Cook over the final four laps of the race.
Ryde leads the championship with 304, followed by Redding (274), Ray (215), Haslam (190) and Cook (172). There are five rounds remaining.CN
