In this week’s Throwback, we dial back the clock to 1992, and the AMA Supercross held inside Indianapolis’ Hoosier Dome. The home of NFL’s Indianapolis Colts hosted its first-ever AMA Supercross on March 21, 1992, before a crowd of 50,415. Honda’s Jeff Stanton (2) rode persuasively to victory, beating teammate and defending champion Jean-Michel Bayle (1) by about a second. Also seen in the photo are Jeff Emig (8), Larry Ward (10) and Guy Cooper (5). It was Stanton’s 15th career supercross win. The race proved pivotal in the championship chase when points leader Damon Bradshaw crashed on lap 12, finishing last and losing the lead he’d held since the second race of the season.

Since that ’92 event Indianapolis has annually hosted AMA Supercross races and will again this weekend in Lucas Oil Stadium, the venue that replaced the Hoosier Dome – later named the RCA Dome.
