Yates Scored His First 883 Victory Over Series Leaders Shawn Higbee and Scott Zampach
In this week’s Throwback we go back 30 years to June of 1994 and visit New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon. One of the AMA Superbike support races that weekend was the Harley-Davidson 883 Twin Sport Series. In that contest it was Aaron Yates (No. 19) breaking through to win his first ever race in the championship. Not only did Yates score his first victory, but the Georgian did it by beating Shawn Higbee (No. 2) and Scott Zampach (No. 1), two of the best riders in the history of the series. On the podium Yates explained he won by braking on his Sportster later than his competitors, before adding, “It’s about time I won.” Yates would go on to win two more 883 Sportster races that season, becoming one of the hottest up-and-coming riders in road racing.
