Michigan Motorcycling With a U.S. Senator
Press Release | August 28, 2024
Senator Gary Peters of Michigan led groups of riders across the state during his annual motorcycle tour earlier this month. One of the riders who joined the Co-Chair of the Senate Motorcycle Caucus for the entire journey was Scott Schloegel, acting MIC President and CEO and a Michigan native himself.
“Besides being a longtime rider, Senator Peters is a true champion for the powersports industry and motorcyclists everywhere, and being able to support his annual ride builds on our relationship with him and his staff,” Schloegel said. “The Senator, who is a former Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, met with constituents and military during the three-day ride of about 800 miles, starting in Kalamazoo, with stops in Wyoming, Traverse City, and Sault Ste. Marie, before we finished up in Sanford.”
Senator Peters first spoke with local union members and retirees in Kalamazoo, before the first leg to the Grand Valley Armory in the city of Wyoming. On day two, the Senator stopped by the FishPash construction project, supporting Great Lakes ecology and fisheries, in downtown Traverse City. Then he rode to Sault Ste. Marie to visit the Soo Locks and discuss a critical new water control system. On the final day of the tour, Senator Peters rode to Camp Grayling where he welcomed top Department of Defense officials for a showcase of Michigan’s military facilities and defense capabilities.
The MIC’s Scott Schloegel and Senator Gary PetersEarlier this year, Senator Peters worked with Schloegel and the Association’s Government Relations Office in designating May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month – to recognize the 30 million motorcycle riders in America and promote safe roadway practices for motorcyclists and drivers.
“My favorite way to travel across Michigan is by motorcycle, and keeping our roadways safe for all users is extremely important to me,” Senator Peters said. “(I was) proud to introduce this resolution to acknowledge my fellow motorcyclists and help encourage all motorists to take the necessary steps to protect riders and everyone on our roads.”
