Jimmy Lewis, Steve Hatch, David Rhodes and Chris Smith Shocked the World with Their Victory
In this week’s Throwback we travel back to 1992 and the Tulsa 4-Day Qualifier. At the event that year the 1991 U.S. Junior World Trophy team was honored for their upset victory in the previous year’s ISDE. Pictured from left to right are Jimmy Lewis, Steve Hatch, David Rhodes and Chris Smith who in 1991 stunned the world when they won the ISDE’s Junior Trophy, the second highest prize awarded in one of the world’s most grueling motorcycle competitions. For nearly a week in Czechoslovakia the quartet overcame numerous challenges that faced them over nearly 1000 miles of trails. In the end the Junior Trophy, for riders under 24 years of age, belonged to the Americans. To that point it marked on the second time in ISDE history that Americans claimed a championship. In 1973 Americans won the Silver Vase, predecessor to the Junior Trophy, on home ground in Dalton, Massachusetts.
