Throwback Thursday: Billy Schaeffer Wins Santa Fe Trophy Race
In this week’s Throwback we wind back the clock 45 years to August of 1974 and the Santa Fe Short Track AMA Grand National. This photo shows Pennsylvania racer Billy Schaeffer celebrating his Trophy Race victory. Schaeffer was riding a Bultaco and stayed just ahead of a three-way battle for second between Phil McDonald, Corky Kenner and Gene Romero, who were all on Yamahas. That’s longtime Camel representative Lynn Griffis standing in the middle. R.J. Reynolds, Camel’s parent company, sponsored the series in those days. Santa Fe Speedway, in the Chicago suburb of Hinsdale, Illinois, was a mecca for short track racing. The track had a weekly series that paid good purses and attracted riders from across the country.
