Ever since Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb finished off his first-ever 450cc Supercross Championship earlier this year, he’s been playing catchup, chasing settings and trying to find his way to the top of the 2019 Lucas Oil/AMA Pro Motocross Championship. At the muddy 2019 Millville Motocross National, he made it to the top.
Millville also marked a return to the top for Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Adam Cianciarulo. Points leader Cianciarulo rebounded from his loss at the previous round, at RedBud, and went 3-1 at Millville to take the win and extend his championship lead considerably.
Webb Wins 2019 Millville National
Webb qualified first for the second race in a row, and he nearly grabbed the holeshot in the muddier first 450cc moto, but it was JGR’s Isaac Teasdale who got the holeshot. Webb was in the lead by the third turn, though, and pulled out to a lead of over 8 seconds before the end of the opening lap over a quartet of privateers; Henry Miller, John Short, Teasdale, and Kyle Cunningham. Monster Energy Kawasaki’s points leader Eli Tomac rounded the opening lap behind Cunningham, and worked his way forward quickly to grab second by the end of lap four.
But Tomac could never get close enough to really challenge Webb out front, and Webb won by about 12 seconds over Tomac, and Webb’s teammate Marvin Musquin. Then came Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Zach Osborne, Paulson Rock/FXR Racing KTM’s Henry Miller, TPJ Racing Honda’s John Short, JGR/Yoshimura Suzuki Factory Racing’s Freddie Noren, Tomac’s teammate Joey Savatgy, Monster Energy Yamaha’s Aaron Plessinger, Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM’s Justin Bogle, Plessinger’s teammate Justin Barcia, Osborne’s teammate Jason Anderson (who went down twice on the opening lap), Anderson’s teammate Dean Wilson, and Bogle’s teammates Benny Bloss and Blake Baggett.
Osborne Second Overall at Spring Creek
Webb grabbed the holeshot outright in moto two, but this time was joined out front by Roczen (who could only muster a 14th in the opening moto). Roczen made a pass a couple laps in when he tripled up a hill (a jump no one else had been jumping under the conditions), and although Webb passed Roczen right back, Webb ended up going down the following lap trying to clear the same triple, and Roczen took over the lead. Webb got up in second, and had to fight off Osborne before he set back out after Roczen.
And with a handful of laps remaining, Webb got to within striking distance, and then he passed Roczen through the famous Millville Sand Whoops (although they weren’t that sandy on this day).
Webb hung on for the win, just holding off a final charge from Roczen at the finish, and Roczen grabbed second. Osborne finished third in front of Barcia and Tomac, who had a fall during the moto but never quite looked like a threat. Behind Tomac came Bloss and Musquin, who fell in the first turn.
Overall, Webb took the win with a 1-1 over Osborne, who grabbed second with a 4-3 only two weeks after missing the RedBud National with an injured collarbone. Tomac was third overall with a 2-5 over Musquin (3-7), Roczen (14-2), Barcia (11-4), Short (6-8), Noren (7-11), Miller (5-14) and Bloss (16-6).
Despite the off day (for Tomac’s standards), Tomac still extended his points lead over Musquin to 38 points with four rounds left to run. Webb moved up to fourth in the points with his win and now sits only five points behind Roczen in third and 16 behind Musquin in second.
Cianciarulo Gets Another One at Spring Creek MX
In the first 250cc moto, Cianciarulo snatched the holeshot, but he was quickly relegated to second by GEICO Honda’s Hunter Lawrence. Lawrence led the entire moto, while Cianciarulo made a couple of charges at him from second before a late-race crash cost him the spot. He ended up third behind JGR/Yoshimura Suzuki’s Alex Martin, whose parents own the Spring Creek MX facility. Behind Cianciarulo came TLD/Red Bull KTM’s Shane McElrath and Monster Energy/Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha’s Dylan Ferrandis, whose motorcycle was smoking over the last few laps of the race. Lawrence’s teammate RJ Hampshire finished sixth, and seventh went to Ferrandis’s teammate Justin Cooper. Everybody else was a lap down at the finish.
Moto one saw a lot of casualties, with GEICO Honda’s Christian Craig and Chase Sexton both suffering mechanical failures that resulted in DNFs. Similar fates befell Star Racing Yamaha’s Mitch Oldenburg, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Michael Mosiman, Cycle Trader/Rock River Yamaha’s Brandon Hartranft, and others.
Martin Second at Millville National
Cooper grabbed the holeshot at the start of moto two, while Martin went off the track on the outside of the first turn. Unable to re-enter right away, Martin got back on the track in the fourth turn, which he was later penalized for.
Cianciarulo went by Cooper immediately and pulled away to take the win. Cooper’s turn at the front went south when Martin went took Cooper out in second, and Cooper’s teammate Nichols took over the spot. Nichols and Martin battled over second for the rest of the race, and Martin took the spot at the finish, but Martin was docked a lap for his off-track excursion at the start of the race. Ferrandis ended up fourth in the moto over McElrath, Lawrence, Sexton, Mosiman, Marchbanks, Cooper, Hampshire, Hartranft and the rest of the field.
Cianciarulo took the overall with a 3-1 over Martin’s 2-3 and Lawrence’s 1-6. Behind them came Ferrandis (5-4), McElrath (4-5), Nichols (14-2), Cooper (7-10), Hampshire (6-11), and Marchbanks (10-9).
The day was great for Cianciarulo in the points standings as well. He now leads Ferrandis in the championship chase by 36 points with four rounds left to run.
Round nine takes place this coming Saturday at Washougal MX Park in Washougal, Washington.
