Throwback Thursday: Indy Mile Heat Race Start (1986)
Larry Lawrence | December 17, 2015
This photo takes us back nearly 30 years ago to the start of the first Heat race of the 1986 Indy Mile Sunday race. Back then Indy was a doubleheader with a race on Saturday night and then one on Sunday afternoon. This shot shows Scott Parker (11) diving to the inside at the start with Rodney Farris (92) side-by-side with him. Following is Steve Morehead (42), Will Davis (21), Aaron Hill (23), Curt Rehmert (63), Robert Land (3Z) and Tim Mertens (right next to Land). Morehead and Farris gapped the rest of the field in the 10-lap Qualifying Heat race and swapped the lead back and forth nearly every lap. On the last lap Farris got too hot into turn one and went down, leaving Morehead clear for the victory over Parker and Davis, who edged Keith Day at the line. (Larry Lawrence photo)
