MILLVILLE, NJ (Sept. 13, 2014) — It ended early, with a red flag, but that made no difference to Hayden Gillim. The bottom line was that Gillim put his TOBC Racing Suzuki atop the podium to win Saturday’s SuperSport race at New Jersey Motorsports Park and in doing so extended his lead over Dustin Dominguez from two to seven points. Dominguez finished second in the treacherous misty conditions. Mark Miller, Jr., who led much of the race, finished third.
Gillim led the first lap under an on and off mist, but Miller made the draft pass on the front straight to start lap two. With Miller not a threat in the championship, Gillim let Miller go without much of a fight. The two got away from the rest of the large field early.
Six laps in and Gillim closed and then took back the lead from Miller. The reason? Series rival Dominguez was on the charge in third and chasing down the leaders. A couple of laps later Dominguez made his way around Miller and by the time he broke through he was five seconds behind Gillim.
A red flag came out when multiple riders fell in separate incidents on lap 10 (including three-time race winner Corey Alexander) caused by heavier rain. That ended the race prematurely.
“This win is for all the people who’ve helped me along the way,” said Gillim, who earned his third victory of the season. “The conditions were tough out there and I just made the best of the situation.”
