Carmichael, Stewart Top High Point

Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart were again the big winners at the AMA National Motocross in Mount Morris, Pennsylvania, yesterday. Carmichael won both motos in the 250cc class, while Stewart did the same in the 125cc class.

Carmichael, on the factory-backed Honda CRF450R, had to work a little bit to get his wins after falling early in the first moto and having to run down Kevin Windham in the second moto.

In the first moto, Carmichael got out in front early but fell on his own and handed the lead over to Team Yamaha’s Chad Reed. Carmichael got up quickly enough to hold on to second, where he started to reel in Reed. He got him a few laps later and then opened up a comfortable lead and went on to take the win.

Reed held on to second for a while until Kevin Windham, on the Amsoil/Chaparral Honda, ran him down and passed the Yamaha rider about the halfway point. Windham ended up second, followed by Reed and his Yamaha teammates David Vuillemin and Tim Ferry, and Kawasaki’s Michael Byrne.

In the second moto, Windham got out in front off the start but couldn’t hold of Carmichael, who got around Windham on the third lap. From there, the race was all Carmichael’s, as he steadily pulled away for his second win of the day and the overall victory. Windham again finished second, followed by Reed and Vuillemin. Fifth this time went to Honda’s Ernesto Fonseca who returned to the track after a long lay-off due to an injured knee.

In the 125cc class, Stewart completely dominated both motos. He got out in front early both times and ran away and hid, winning the first moto by almost 40 seconds and the second moto by about 30 seconds.

Second overall went to Team Suzuki’s Broc Hepler who finished second in both motos. He battled back and forth with Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Matt Walker in the first moto and again a little bit in the second moto. Walker eventually lost sight of Hepler in the second moto and got passed by Yamaha of Troy’s Mike Brown before it was all over. Team Honda’s Nathan Ramsey ended up fifth in the moto. Brown ended up third overall with a 4-3, and Walker fourth overall with a 3-4.

The weather turned out good for racing. The threatening skies only dropped light rain, leaving the course in good shape.
