In this week’s Throwback we dial the Wayback Machine to May of 1981 and visit Kansas City, Missouri’s Arrowhead Stadium for round 10 of that year’s AMA Supercross Series. This epic photo features the start of the main with Honda’s Donnie Hansen (21) showing another example of how he earned the nickname of “Holeshot Hansen.” Right there with Hansen on the wider line into the first turn is Kawasaki’s Jeff Ward (12). Other riders with great starts include Mike Bell (1), Kent Howerton (2), Jim Gibson (7), Darren Rhoten (79), Johnny O’Mara (40), Carlos Serrano (62) and Ross Pederson (447).

It was Suzuki’s Mark Barnett (just behind #1 Mike Bell) who made his way to the front and scored the victory that night, his fifth of the season. Barnett would also go on to win the championship that year.
