Garcia thrilled the home crowd by getting off to a fast start on Saturday and built momentum throughout the day to take a commanding win by nearly two minutes over TM Moto’s Zach Pichon.

“I worked hard after the GP of Portugal to be ready for this race,” said Garcia, who also won the Enduro1 class. “I felt I came into my home race prepared and ready to fight. I made some mistakes and some crashes, but overall it went well. It’s incredible to race this close to my home, to win is amazing.”

“For me, it was a good day,” said Pichon, who won the Enduro2 class. “I had some good times in the Enduro test. I knew Josep would be fast here, it’s his home race. But I’m pleased with my performance. I hope to continue like this tomorrow.”

Verona felt like he was better than third. “Third overall is nice, but I think I could have fought for second if it wasn’t for some mistakes,” he said. “I know there’s places to improve, so I will aim to do that tomorrow.”

Sherco riders Hamish MacDonald, the Enduro3-class winner, and Antoine Magain completed the top five overall.

Verona proved he was indeed capable of better on day two after a dramatic late charge saw the Italian take the day’s overall victory by less than two seconds over Garcia.

“It’s been a hard day on the trail,” Verona said. “I’m happy to get my first win of the year on the 450F. It wasn’t easy. It’s been a long day, so slippery on lap one, but got better as the day progressed. The Enduro test was tough, the lines I checked last night helped me on the bigger bike. Slowly, we are getting there with a pace to fight at the front.”

It was also Verona’s first Enduro2 win of the season.

Garcia led most of the day until late in the day when a slight mistake cost him the win. “To be honest, I was having a perfect day of racing, enjoying the muddy conditions,” he said. “I had the gap out to 30 seconds. But on the penultimate cross test, I hit the metal container with my right foot and crashed, which caused me a bit of pain. It’s disappointing to lose, but this championship is long.”

Garcia still took top honors in the Enduro1 class.

The race for the final podium positions came down to the seconds, with Honda rider Samuele Bernardini winning out, finishing approximately 30 seconds behind Garcia and just 13 seconds ahead of Sherco rider and Enduro3 winner Antoine Magain. Fifth-place Margan Lesiardo, on the factory Triumph, was also just a few seconds behind.

“I’m so happy, this is my first podium in EnduroGP class,” said Bernardini. “I pushed as hard as I could today, trying all the time. I’m very happy with this result, thank you so much to my team.”

In the EnduroGP (overall) Championship, Garcia leads with 72 points, followed by Verona with 65 and Pichon with 56. CN
