The AMA Arenacross Series returned to the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, on January 27 for the second time in two weeks. Round seven of the 2024 season marks the halfway point of the series, which saw a longer track than usual, with lap times nearing 40 seconds apiece.
Ryan Breece made ground in the championship hunt by taking a dominant 1-1 victory over title rival and defending champ Kyle Peters.
Breece bumped up his confidence by starting the day with the fastest qualifying time and made it even stronger by scoring a heat-race win.
In main one, the Yamaha rider, Breece, jumped out to the early lead and held the top spot for every lap of the 13-lap race. Peters stayed close in second but lost the tow midway through the race.
Izaih Clark rounded out the box in race one.
Race two flipped the start order and forced both Breece and Peters to the back row. Breece managed to get up front early and crossed the first lap in third place. It took just two more laps for him to find the lead, which spelled trouble for Peters, who started back in sixth. Although he fought his way through the field, it was too little, too late for Peters, as Breece’s lead was over three seconds by the time Peters got into second place.
Jared Lesher clawed his way through the field to grab third in race two. A 1-1 victory for Breece moves him to within 19 points of championship leader Peters.
“I just started clicking off laps,” Breece said. “I had a good line there to the right [in the whoop] and then was able to keep on going and bring that thing home to the finish. It feels really freaking good, this is what we’ve been striving for.”
Ronald Johnson topped the AX ProAm division, with Jayden Riley sweeping the A/B All-Stars race. CN
