Round nine of the MXGP World Championship made its stop just outside of Madrid for the MXGP of Spain, May 28-29. Hot temperatures and tricky track conditions tested all the racers in both classes. Two French riders, Maxime Renaux and Tom Vialle, came away with the overall wins in their respective classes.
MXGP
Spanish fans cheered loud as their countryman Jorge Prado grabbed the holeshot in race one. He battled up front for the entire first lap but relinquished the lead to MXGP rookie Renaux. The Yamaha rider went around the outside of the Spaniard to take the lead and soldier on with the eventual race win. Behind him, Tim Gajser and Prado duked it out for the second spot, with Gajser making his way past the GasGas rider. All three stayed close at the front finishing the moto in successive running order.
Race two, once again, saw Prado at the front, this time looking to make a break for it in front of the home crowd. Renaux stayed close at the start, but Prado began putting time between the two. Slick track conditions eventually caught up with Prado, who fell a few laps later, handing the lead to Renaux. Prado remounted and finished 11th.
Up front it was all Renaux who claimed the first double race win of his MXGP career. His Yamaha teammate, Glenn Coldenhoff, finished second with Brian Bogers rounding out the podium in race two.
Overall results finished with Renaux, Coldenhoff and Bogers going 1-2-3. Gajser maintains the points lead by 66 over Renaux.
MX2
In MX2, Jago Geerts took off with the early lead in race one. Title rival Tom Vialle quickly overtook the second spot after passing MX2 wildcard Rick Elzinga. A heavily watered track made for slippery conditions and Geerts crashed wildly off one of the large tabletops. Geerts dropped back several spots before getting up and finishing ninth. The crash handed the lead to Vialle, who held it to the checkers.
Simon Langenfelder clawed his way up to a second-place finish, with Stephen Rubini crossing the line in third.
Liam Everts showed his stuff in MX2 race two, as he took the holeshot over Geerts and Vialle. Geerts took the spot away before the end of lap one and tried to get away, as Vialle moved to second.
The Yamaha rider, Geerts, then fell again in a turn, which allowed Vialle to get the lead. Geerts was able to remount and still finish second in the race, salvaging third overall in the process.
Langenfelder raced strongly again in race two and finished in the final podium position. His 2-3 finishes earned him second overall.
However, it was all Vialle who finished with 1-1 moto scores and the overall. He now leads Geerts in the points by 10. CN
