| June 1, 2022
The sound of 125cc two-strokes dominated (at least for a while) at the fifth round of the AMA East Hare Scramble Championship at Tom Hurd’s Broome-Tioga Sports Center in Richford, New York, May 28-29. The race was co-sanctioned by the New York Off-road Association (NYOA).

Toby Cleveland and his Yamaha YZ125 already had a four-bike-length lead heading up the hill after the first turn at the start of the premier race. Cleveland had his small-bore two-stroke singing as he led the way with a pair of bigger-bore Yamahas hot on his rear fender ridden by Cooper Jones and Ian Potter. KTM-mounted Timothy Steiner was holding down fourth and Max Fernandez, on another 125cc two-stroke, was holding down fifth.
However, it was Cleveland on the move. He had his Yamaha pinned as he opened a small gap over Jones, a gap that was growing ever so slightly after each lap. By lap three, he led Jones by 36 seconds. Unfortunately for Cleveland, his screaming 125cc couldn’t take it any longer and eventually signed off on the last lap.
With Cleveland now a spectator, Jones inherited the lead and went on to win the race.
Fernandez, who had moved into third by lap four, ended up second on his GasGas 125cc two-stroke, crossing the finish line a distant two-plus minutes behind Jones.
Potter took third almost a minute behind Fernandez.
Beta’s Kyle McDonal was fourth overall after completing the first lap in 10th place.
Steiner held on to complete the top five overall.
The top A-class rider was Suzuki-mounted Grant Maryott in ninth overall, and the top B- and C-class riders were Rayjond Grenewicz (Yamaha) and Kevin Gardner (Yamaha), respectively.
