Local Hero Steve Lamson Nails the Holeshot
In this week’s Throwback, we dial up the date of May 5, 1996, location Rancho Cordova, California’s Prairie City SVRA. It the annual Hangtown Classic AMA Motocross National. In this shot, motocross photographer extraordinaire Kinney Jones captured for Cycle News the most intense moment of any outdoor national, the start of the moto. That’s Northern California’s own Steve Lamson (No.1) nailing the holeshot on his factory Honda. Lamson would go on to win at Hangtown that day, one of his nine national victories that season en route to the ’96 AMA Motocross National Championship. Others visible in the photo include Jeff Willoh (No. 73), Cory Keeney (No. 39), Casey Lytle (No. 119), Brian Deegan (No. 25), Tim Ferry (No. 20), John Dowd (No. 7), Kim Ashkenazi (No. 838), Michael Craig (No. 17), Pedro Gonzalez (No. 147), Buddy Antunez (No. 22), Ezra Lusk (No. 34), Nathan Ramsey (No. 47) and Steve Herman (No. 56). Dowd and Mickael Pichon joined Lamson on the podium in second and third overall respectively.
