Throwback Thursday: Chicago or St. Louis?
In this week’s Throwback we dial the clock back 24 years to August of 1995, and the AMA National Road Race at Gateway International Raceway, which was located directly across the Mississippi River from St. Louis in a town called Fairmont City, Illinois. Cycle News reporter and photographer Henny Ray Abrams found this interesting angle showing the AMA 125 Grand Prix competitors racing through a corner, with Interstate direction signs in the background. It almost appears as if half of the racers are going to St. Louis, while the other half are heading towards Chicago. It’s hard to see from this angle, but that’s Randy Renfrow leading the race. Renfrow took the victory that day ahead of Masahiro Iizuka and Rodney Fee. The AMA 125 Grand Prix Championship was short lived, lasting only a single season. Fee won the championship that year.
