Throwback Thursday: 1976 Houston Short Track Start
In this week’s Throwback we wind back the clock 43 years ago to the opening weekend of the 1976 AMA Grand National Championship. It was a doubleheader weekend at the Houston Astrodome. In ’76 the TT National kicked off the series on Friday night, followed by the Short Track National on Saturday night.
This Gary Van Voorhis photo shows the start of the Short Track main in front of a packed house. It’s hard to tell for the glare on the number plates, but that’s pole winner Kenny Roberts on the inside. Blasting off from the front row alongside Roberts is Steve Eklund, Kenny McDonald and Rick Hocking on the outside.
You can just make out Bubba Rush (No. 24) on the second row. Rush made his way to the front to win the national that night on his Bultaco.
