Throwback Thursday: Cal Rayborn III Leads 1987 Memphis AMA 250 Grand Prix
Cal Rayborn III, riding a Team Nordica Roberts Yamaha, leads the a round of the 1987 Castrol AMA 250 Grand Prix Championship at Memphis Motorsports Park. Rayborn, the namesake son of his famous racing father, was a talented road racer in his own right. Good enough to earn factory-backed ride with the team owned by Kenny Roberts. In this race it was Rayborn’s teammate John Kocinski (No. 80) who clinched that year’s AMA 250 Grand Prix Championship by finishing a conservative second. Randy Renfrow (in the red Shoei helmet right behind Rayborn) went on to win the Memphis race on his Vance & Hines Honda. Running third in this shot is Alan Carter (No. 97) on the Team MacLean Honda. Carter rounded out the podium finishers that blazingly hot August day. Also visible in the shot are 1986 series champ Donny Greene and four-time world champion Kork Ballington (No. 99).
