In this week’s Throwback we wind it back 30 years to the year 1988. George Michael’s “Father Figure” topped the pop charts, the first transatlantic fiber optic cable was laid, able to carry 40,000 telephone calls simultaneously, the movie “Beetlejuice” hit theaters, unemployment was at an eight-year low and gas cost 96 cents per gallon.
Pictured is the start of the 1988 of the Daytona round of the AMA 125cc East Supercross Series. Denny Stephenson (360) nailed the holeshot over Todd DeHoop (37). Also seen in the start shot are Brian McElroy (237), Robert Naughton (54), Robert Hayes Jr. (994) and Brian Carroll (533).
Team Suzuki’s Todd DeHoop came through to win the race over McElroy and Chris Coleman. DeHoop went on to win the AMA 125cc Eastern Region Supercross Championship that season just ahead of Mike Jones and Mike LaRocco. DeHoop scored a series-leading three 125 East races that winter.
The Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series visits Daytona International Speedway again this coming Saturday.
