Sam Sunderland Out of Dakar Rally – Stunning news from the 2018 Dakar Rally this morning as leader and defending champion Sam Sunderland is reportedly out of the race. According to a brief statement on the Dakar website, Red Bull KTM factory rider Sam Sunderland pulled out of the final part of stage 4 “due to back pains.”
Sources on the ground say that Sunderland suffered a bad crash into a hole and suffered a compression injury to his back. BBC Sport reports that Sam Sunderland is currently being airlifted from the bivouac to a hospital in Peru.
