In this week’s Throwback we dialed the time machine back 48 years to 1969 and the July Ascot Park TT National in Gardena, California. Two legends of AMA Grand National racing, Harley-Davidson’s Bart Markel (4) and BSA’s Dick Mann (2) are being introduced to the crowd.
Both riders were leading veterans by then, but still threats to win nationals. Markel was in his 12th year of pro racing, Mann in his 15th season. Both riders won a pair of nationals in ‘69 – Markel on the Half-Miles at Terre Haute and Louisville, Mann, the Short Track at Santa Fe Speedway near Chicago and the Peoria TT National.
Both Markel and Mann are now members of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame.
