In MXGP, Cairoli and his Red Bull KTM teammate Jeffrey Herlings traded moto wins, but it was Cairoli topping the all-important tie-breaking second moto, which puts his name down in the record book as the official GP winner. Cairoli had his chance to win the first moto, as he grabbed an early lead but could not hold off Herlings late in the race.
Herlings worked his way up through the field, and when Cairoli bobbled, it was enough for Herlings to eventually make the pass and eventual win.
Cairoli again got out in front early in the second moto, while Herlings was mired back in the pack off the start.
Herlings again fought his way up through the pack in round two, but, this time, when he got into second, Cairoli was long gone, and he had to settle for second in the race and in the overall placings.
Third overall went to Husqvarna’s Gautier Paulin who went 3-3 on the day. But it was a very good day for the Frenchman, as he gained big points on championship runner-up Tim Gajser, who rode in pain, the result from a crash earlier in the qualifiers. The defending champ, Gajser, went 12-10 on the day for 11th overall. Paulin is now just one point behind Gajser in third.
Cairoli, however, still enjoys a comfortable points lead; the Italian now has 305 points to Gajser’s 261.
“I got really good starts today and this is what we have been working on,” Cairoli said. “I’m really happy with the GP win and also extending the points lead this is very good. It’s a very special track for me I’m very happy to race here in Germany and Teutschenthal is one of my favorite hard-pack tracks, it is similar soil to the track I train on.”
Herlings said, “In the first race I was in second pretty quick but in the second one I was around 10th on the first turn and had to work my up to second, I burned to much energy. He [Cairoli] is the eight-time champ for a reason, he’s a great rider and I just couldn’t close the gap [in the second moto].”

In MX2, Team Suzuki’s Jeremy Seewer came away with the overall victory after going 1-4. The Swiss rider was fifth after the first lap in the first moto but slowly worked his way to the front, passing points leader Pauls Jonass late in the race to nab the win.
Seewer nearly went down right off the start of the second moto after tangling with another rider, putting him in a deep hole, but he again charged to the front and got to fourth, but it would still be good enough to take the overall victory.
Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Thomas Covington got a great start in the second moto and put it to good use. He took charge early on and never looked back for the moto win. Unfortunately for him, he started the first moto in 31st place and crossed the finish line in 14th. His 14-1 netted him fourth overall.
It was a proud day for Suzuki after seeing two of its riders standing on the top two steps of the podium in MX2. Standing right next to Seewer on the podium was Seewer’s teammate Hunter Lawrence, who tallied 4-3 results to grab runner-up honors.
Third overall went to KTM’s Pauls Jonass with a 2-5. CN
