Mahias Wins Latest WorldSSP Drama Festival
Once again the FIM Supersport World Championship set raceday alight, after 16-laps and multiple incidents and accidents, all of which finally gave Lucas Mahias (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) his first race win in this category and Yamaha’s second with their new R6.
Sheridan Morais (Kallio Race System Yamaha) led for much of the race and only lost out in the final sector, as Mahias kept him behind across the line by only 0.014 seconds.
Patrick Jacobsen (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) was the third rider on the podium, and also close to the win, only 0.153 seconds from Mahias.
Jules Cluzel (CIA Landlord Insurance Honda) secured fourth place in a fight with Michael Canducci (Puccetti Racing Junior Team FMI Kawasaki) and Roberto Rolfo (Team Factory Vamag MV Agusta).
Christian Gamarino (BARDHAL EVAN BROS. Honda Racing) was seventh, Kyle Ryde (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) a lonely eighth.
Hannes Soomer (WilSport Racedays Honda) went ninth and was top ESS rider. Luke Stapleford (Profile Racing Triumph) gave the British manufacturer a top ten finish.
An incredibly dramatic race – yet again in WorldSSP – saw Robin Mulhauser (CIA Landlord Insurance Honda) crash out on the opening lap after a big highside at turn seven. Kyle Smith (GEMAR Balloons – Team Lorini Honda) went from potential winner to crasher before half race distance. He got going again to finish 16th. Gino Rea (Team GO ELEVEN Kawasaki) was forced to stop with a technical problem.
Most significant of all, returning rider Kenan Sofuoglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) was taken out by a crash from Thailand race winner Federico Caricasulo (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team).
Aiden Wagner (GEMAR Balloons – Team Lorini Honda) was 17th, Lachlan Epis (Response RE Racing Kawasaki) 20th and Anthony West (EAB West Racing Yamaha) did not start.
In the championship Mahias leads with 45, Rolfo has 40, Morais 34 and Ryde is fourth with 32.
