Doug Polen was on a major roll. He’d cleaned house in the club ranks in 1986 racing Suzuki GSX-Rs and Honda Interceptors, proving to be practically unbeatable. In 1987 the AMA added a class called the EBC AMA Supersport Series to road racing Nationals and the class would become one of the most hotly contested in all of road racing – both by the riders and the manufacturers. Racing production 600cc motorcycle was right in Polen’s wheelhouse and after his dominating opening-round win at Daytona in March of ’87, it looked as if he was simply on another level than the rest.
