In addition to hosting the best modern day motocross racers in the world, the U.S. Grand Prix at Glen Helen is bringing back legendary heroes from the past. The third round of the FIM Veterans Cup series will be held in conjunction with the USGP in Southern California on May 29-30th. Among the heroes who have committed to race for the cup are Husqvarna-mounted Ty Davis, John Dowd and 1981 USGP winner Chuck Sun.
Sun has raced previous Veterans World Cup rounds and was the first U.S. rider to sign up for this historic event. “I rode 2008 FIM Veteran’s World Cup rounds in Spain, Belgium and Britain and I can tell you these guys are fast!” Apparently once a world champ, always a world champ and as part of the MX des Nations team to first beat the European racers back in 1981, Sun still has something to prove. In fact he is cutting short his Baja 500 pre-running to come to Glen Helen to race for the Veteran’s Cup.
“I’ll be in Mexico pre-running the Baja 500 with the Hoy/Fox Toyota Team on a KTM, but there is no way that I could miss the USGP’s return, especially on the 30th anniversary of Marty Moates’ amazing win,” says Sun. “In fact, hanging out with Marty Moates is what motivated me to become the second American to ever win the USGP at Carlsbad. After seeing the Carlsbad USGP 1980 movie teasers featuring Marty’s win, it has really motivated me again to win the USGP at Glen Helen 30 years later!”
Although he will be going for the win in the Veterans class, limited to 40+ year-old riders, just being able to compete at the USGP is a victory for Sun. “Who could be so lucky to still be racing after all these years? Doing the USGP and then the Baja 500 is the opportunity of a lifetime.”
Fans can see their favorite racers, past and present up close and personal as the USGP pits will be open Saturday May 29 from 10am-6pm for the qualifiers. For Sunday’s main event, the Paddock will be open from 9am-6pm. Cost is only $30 for both days, plus admission. Children 6-12 get a reduced rate of $15, plus admission for both days. Unlike Supercross where you get shooed out of the pits prior to racing or the AMA outdoor national MX races where you have to leave by noon on race day, fans can stay in the USGP Paddock all day to mingle with their favorite riders after their races.
Tickets for the “Race of the Century” as the USGP is being billed, are available at the Glen Helen website www.glenhelen.com as well as at participating local Yamaha dealers. Reserved camping is also available for $50 per spot.
