The Dakar Rally

The final stage of the Total-Cairo-Dakar 2000 Rally was held today and fittingly it was KTM’s Juan Roma who won the stage. The Spaniard, who led the majority of the rally until faltering in the 14th and 15th stages to eventually finish 17th overall, topped his KTM teammates Henk Knuiman and Eric Bernard in today’s final stage.

For overall winner Richard Sainct and the factory BMW team, today was a day for celebration as the top four overall finishers were BMW-mounted.

Second place overall went to Oscar Gallardo, with Cycle World magazine off-road editor Jimmy Lewis ending the rally third overall. Fourth overall went to Jean Brucy, with Jurgen Mayer riding the first non-BMW home in fifth. Mayer rode a KTM.
