Vuillemin strikes in San Diego

Team Yamaha’s David Vuillemin led the San Diego Supercross from start to finish, putting an end to the two-race win streak of Jeremy McGrath.

While Vuillemin streaked away at the start and was never headed, McGrath was the victim of a poor start and a first-turn altercation that left him with a bent front disc brake. The Chaparral/Mazda Yamaha rider carried on and managed to work his way up to fourth by the end of the 20-lap race.

Second place went to the ultra-consistent Mike LaRocco on the Team Amsoil/Jack in the Box Honda. LaRocco beat Team Honda’s Kevin Windham to the flag for second place.

One rider who didn’t race was Team Yamaha’s Jimmy Button. The four-stroke rider crashed in practice on Saturday afternoon and suffered a neck injury. Initially, it was feared that Button had suffered paralaysis, but he later regained movement in his limbs.

The 125cc main event was won by Greg Schnell over points leader Tallon Vohland.
