Lucas Coenen quietly announced he’ll be skipping the final two rounds of the FIM Motocross World Championship in China and Australia as he shifts his focus to the Motocross of Nations event held in October where he’ll ride for Team Belgium. This effectively marks the end of his MXGP career as he’s already set to race full-time in America come the 2027 season.
“Hey everyone, I won’t be racing the last 2 GP’s,” he posted to his Instagram story. “We are working on being back at 100% for the Nations. Good luck to everyone out there.”
At one point this season Coenen was leading the MXGP points chase over newly-crowned champion Jeffrey Herlings. Things went south for Coenen after a big crash at the Southwick round of Pro Motocross where he did not finish either moto. He then crashed the following weekend at the MXGP of Great Britain and suffered an injury to his left hip and sciatic nerve which held him from racing the next few rounds of the series. Coenen later returned at the MXGP of The Netherlands but crashed during timed qualifying and did not race.
