Charli Cannon delivered a breakthrough performance at High Point Raceway, capturing her first career overall victory at round three of the Women’s Pro Motocross Championship, powered by Synchrony. The Quad Lock Honda rider’s victory not only marked a major milestone in her young career but also brought an end to Altus Motorsports bLU cRU Yamaha rider Lachlan Turner’s remarkable streak of seven consecutive WMX overall victories, dating back to last season.

Charli Cannon (7) took the overall victory at the WMX round at High Point. It was her first WMX win.

The weekend itself unfolded with relentless intensity, from a chaotic first-turn pileup to a race-stopping red flag and a malfunctioning holeshot device. The action was as unpredictable as it was dramatic, making it one of the most eventful rounds of the championship thus far.

With the arrival of her 17th birthday, making her eligible to compete in the pro ranks, SLR Honda Racing’s Mayla Herrick promptly delivered a breakout performance during the first moto on Friday. The rookie wasted little time establishing control at the front, launching into an early lead while chaos unfolded in her wake. JPM Kawasaki’s Taylah McCutcheon struggled for traction on the crucial double jump, momentarily stalling the pack and creating a decisive gap. With much of the field unable to double through that section, Herrick seized the opportunity to break away and establish a commanding advantage.

Behind her, two-time FIM Women’s Motocross World Champion Lotte van Drunen (Yamaha) quickly slotted into second, with SLR Honda Racing’s Mikayla Nielsen and Turner in close pursuit. Nielsen and Turner engaged in an intense early duel for third, trading momentum over several laps before Turner completed the pass and set her sights on van Drunen.

As the race wore on, the battle tightened, but Herrick remained composed under pressure in her debut pro race. Delivering a flawless, wire-to-wire performance, she surged to a landmark victory ahead of van Drunen, while Turner fought her way home for third. Nielsen and Cannon completed the top five.

Lachlan Turner’s win streak came to an end, with second overall.

On Saturday, a huge first-turn pileup brought out the red flag, leaving Herrick out of the race.

When the race restarted, Turner seized the holeshot and immediately established a clear lead, heading a tightly packed group that included McCutcheon, Cannon, Nielsen and Jordan Jarvis (Yamaha). Meanwhile, van Drunen was left to charge through the field from midpack after a damaged holeshot device compromised her launch at the start.

As the race settled into a rhythm, Turner methodically extended her advantage to more than seven seconds, with Cannon, Nielsen, Jarvis and van Drunen forming the chasing pack.

However, with just two laps remaining, the race took a dramatic turn. Turner’s commanding ride unraveled when she cross-rutted and went down, opening the door for Cannon to capitalize. Although Turner remounted quickly to salvage second place, there was no catching Cannon, who sprinted clear to secure the victory. Turner finished second, with Nielsen in third. The result proved decisive overall, as Cannon’s 5-1 scores edged Turner’s 3-2 on the tiebreaker, earning Cannon a landmark first career overall victory. Van Drunen secured third overall with a 2-4 tally, while Nielsen (4-3) and Jarvis (6-5) completed the top five.

“That was wild,” said Cannon. “I got a good start that first go-round and I had the lead but then it got red-flagged. I was so disappointed. I got another good jump on the restart and was running behind Lala [Turner] until she went down and I was able to capitalize on her mistake. After Friday’s fifth-place finish, I was a little down, but I made up for it today.”CN
