It’s time to go racing in Indianapolis! Round nine of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross invades Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana for another night of Triple Crown racing. Points are still tight in both classes as we gear up for tonight’s gate drop. After six exciting races, Hunter Lawrence and Cole Davies stand atop their respective podiums.

450 Race 1
Ken Roczen battled his way to a win in the first 450 main event. The Progressive Suzuki rider started back in third but made quick moves to get around Jorge Prado and early leader, Cooper Webb. Roczen’s whoop speed allowed him to easily pass Webb as the #94 took over the top spot. He opened up a five second lead and easily cruised to the opening victory.

Hunter Lawrence took second at the line. The Honda HRC rider fought tooth and nail in the opening laps and didn’t look particularly comfortable as he lost positions in the early parts of the race. Lawrence, the points leader, battled with Eli Tomac and made a late-race pass when Tomac got stuck with lapped riders. This allowed Lawrence to retaliate and steal the second spot away.

Tomac made a good run after a bad start and found himself in the mix for a podium. After duking it out with Webb, Tomac found himself jammed up with lappers. Lawrence capitalized and jumped past Tomac, putting the number-three back to third.

450 Race 2
Hunter Lawrence and Eli Tomac jockeyed for the holeshot off the start of 450 race two but it was Justin Cooper who took over the lead on lap one. The Star Racing Yamaha rider battled with Tomac in the early laps with the two exchanging the lead. Cooper fought back with an aggressive pass before the whoops to reclaim the lead and used the lappers to his advantage as he held the top spot all the way to the finish. This is the first time Cooper has led laps this season and marks his first-ever race win on a 450.

Eli Tomac finished second in the second main event. He led four total laps during the race but lost the spot when Cooper forced the issue going into the whoops. Tomac found himself stuck with lappers yet again and nearly collided with Vince Friese. Luckily, he kept it on two wheels and finished on the box. He holds the lead with a 3-2 score going into the final race.

Cooper Webb rounded out the podium with a third. Hunter Lawrence held the spot for most of the race but he also collided with lapped riders and nearly crashed. This mistake allowed Webb to sneak by and steal the spot. Lawrence finished fourth at the line.

Race one winner Ken Roczen suffered a nasty crash with Aaron Plessinger at the start of race two. After collecting himself, Roczen salvaged a 10th at the line.
450 Race 3
Race three was all about Hunter Lawrence. The Honda HRC rider needed to win the race if he wanted a shot at the overall and he did exactly that. A holeshot put him in position to take the wire-to-wire victory and the night’s overall win. He actually tied on points with Tomac but the win in race three gave him the edge. This marks Lawrence’s second win of the year, the second of his 450 career, as he keeps the championship lead by four points over Tomac.

Eli Tomac finished second in the final race which put him second on the night. He stayed close to Lawrence off the start but a few mistakes through the whoops set him back. Tomac never managed to close that gap but his consistency paid off with a second overall. He’s still second in the points, four down from Lawrence.

Cooper Webb finished third overall with a fourth-place finish in race three. He battled with his teammate Justin Cooper for most of the race and got the tie breaker with the better result in the final race. Webb is still third in points but didn’t gain any ground to the championship leaders. Justin Cooper finished one spot back in fourth overall.

Ken Roczen rebounded with a third in the final main of the night. After his crash in race two, this was a great way to end the night and puts him fifth for the night.

250 Race 1
Cole Davies kicked off the night with a win in 250 race one. We’ve been waiting to see Davies at the front of the field and he struck early while the whoops were still fresh. He started third but quickly passed for second and then the lead, with both moves coming with fast runs through the whoops. Once in the lead it was smooth sailing for the New Zealander.

Jo Shimoda finished second in the first main. The Honda HRC rider started second behind Daxton Bennick but later lost the spot to Davies. Shimoda faced pressure from Seth Hammaker and the two passed Bennick in quick succession to drop the early leader off the podium. Shimoda and Hammer rounded out the podium in second and third respectively.

Bennick led the early laps but was passed by Davies and later the Shimoda-Hammaker battle. He finished fourth with Nate Thrasher rounding out the top five.

250 Race 2
Jalek Swoll led the early parts of the second 250 race in what looked to be his breakout race of the year. Behind Swoll, Davies and Shimoda fought hard for the second spot. The two front runners from race one both passed Swoll in the same turn and dropped him back to third. Davies again held on for the win over Shimoda, making it two wins in two races thus far. Shimoda has two seconds on the board.

Pierce Brown found his way to third at the line. The points leader finished 10th in race one but battled back for a spot on the box in race two.

250 Race 3
The final 250 race of the night started with the same front runners taking control off the start. Triumph-mounted Jalek Swoll once again grabbed the holeshot but was quickly overtaken by Club MX rider Devin Simonson. Simonson led briefly as Davies made his way to the front.

Davies passed for the lead with another clean run through the whoops and made a break for it. The Star Racing Yamaha rider made it a clean sweep with 1-1-1 scores to win the night’s overall. This is his first win of the year and puts him at the top of the championship standings by just one point.

Seth Hammakaer rallied to second with a last lap pass on Jo Shimoda. Hammaker’s pass proved crucial as a second place finish marked his best result of the night. Further, this pass put him one point clear of Daxton Bennick and allowed Hammaker to take third overall.

Jo Shimoda rounded out the podium in the final race. He ran second for most of the main event but mistakes on the final lap put him off track and allowed Hammaker to sneak by. Shimoda was consistent all night and 2-2-3 finishes put him second overall.

Justin Cooper looked up to the challenge as he was a close second overall, just 0.02 seconds off Tomac. The 450SX points leader, Hunter Lawrence clocked third overall with a 45.5. Jorge Prado returns to action this weekend in fourth overall with Cooper Webb rounding out the top five. The top eight riders all ran a 45-second lap which goes to show how close the racing will be tonight.

250SX
Just like the 450 class, last week’s winner is on top of the board once again. Seth Hammaker topped both sessions in the 250SX East division and leads the way before tonight’s three main events. Hammaker is actually the fastest rider in either class as his 45.1 is three-tenths better than Tomac’s time. Cole Davies grabbed second overall but was half a second off Hammaker. His whoop speed will certainly come into play as the track breaks down. Jo Shimoda jumped to third overall late in the second session and showed he can post a fast time even in the rutted conditions.
