In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock 40 years to 1986 and that year’s AMA 250cc Motocross National season finale in Lakewood, Colorado. This photo shows defending AMA 250 Motocross National Champion Jeff Ward (1) racing his factory Kawasaki past the factory Honda of Rick Johnson (5) to take over the lead in the second moto. “Wardy” would go on to win the overall that day in Lakewood with a 3-1 over RJ’s 1-3. It had mostly been a rough season for Ward, but on this day, he finally put it all together to score victory. The win kept Johnson from earning a perfect season. He won every other 250 National that season en route to winning the national championship.
