20 Years Later: Nicky Hayden’s 2006 MotoGP Championship Triumph

Cycle News Staff | March 26, 2026

Twenty years have passed since Nicky Hayden claimed motorcycle racing’s most prestigious title — the MotoGP World Championship — and it still feels remarkable. He was the last American to accomplish that feat. We want to thank Red Bull and Jeremy Malott, Red Bull’s Motorsports Marketing Manager, for reminding us of something we should never forget. Nicky Hayden was the 2006 MotoGP World Champion, and it’s worth celebrating not just for the racer he had become, but for the person he always was.

To mark the anniversary, we dug into the Cycle News archives and created a special tribute issue in Nicky’s honor. If you are attending the Red Bull Grand Prix of the United States in Austin, Texas at the Circuit of The Americas this weekend, look for the Red Bull zone on the hill overlooking turn 18 to pick up a printed copy of the issue.

If you won’t be able to attend in person, you can check out the digital version by clicking the cover image below.
