Ken Roczen wrapped up his World Supercross run with a victory at the Australian GP, narrowly beating the SX1 field. Christian Craig achieved an emotional first main-race win, while Haiden Deegan finished sixth at a sold-out Cbus Super Stadium, November 28.

In WSX’s three-race format, Roczen, on the Pipes Motorsports Suzuki, secured victory in the first sprint race but finished fourth in the second race, which Cooper Webb won. Roczen was third in the main race but scored enough points to take the overall victory in the event with 1-4-3 motos.
“I am really happy with my riding,” Roczen said. “I crushed the whoops and pumped to take the overall win.”
“I’ve always been getting pretty good off the gate, but then I kind of got closed off,” Roczen said of the main race. “With this dirt, how tight the start is, it decides basically within a thousandth of a second. Then once you roll the entire section afterwards, I just took my time. People are cross-jumping left and right, so it was hard to just attack, but I’m pretty pumped.”
Veteran rider Christian Craig took second overall, but his highlight of the night was winning the final race after going 3-9 in the first two. It was the 34-year-old’s first race win in the World Supercross Championship ever.

“It means a lot for sure. I can sit here and give you a lot of stories of why I shouldn’t be racing dirt bikes right now, but we’re here,” Craig said. “I just beat some legends, some champions, and proved that I can still do this. And, man, that was so much fun.
“We’re here in a good spot. I have a good team behind me and people that want me on their team.”
Wild-card entry Cooper Webb, on the Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha, made his one and what will be his only showing in the series and placed third overall, winning the second race.
Eli Tomac, on the Red Bull KTM wild-card entry, was fourth overall, while Joey Savatgy, on the Quad Lock Honda, was fifth overall.
Deegan, who was once coached by Craig, took sixth place overall in just his second race in the 450cc class. Deegan’s shining moment came in the third race when he passed Tomac en route to fourth.

“I’m just going to say this,” Deegan said. “I was battling Eli Tomac, and I was like a little kid. I was in shock the whole time. I was like, ‘I just passed Eli Tomac! I just passed Eli Tomac!’ I was tripping the whole time. That was badass. But anyway, good job to Christian, man. I know he’s been through a lot.
“So, to see that happen, I felt like, I don’t know, a happy son! But yeah, that was good. We fought hard, and it was awesome.”
Championship contender Jason Anderson, Roczen’s teammate, rode well until a fall in race three relegated him to 16th in the moto and 13th overall.
“Some good things to take from it,” Anderson said. “Obviously, it didn’t end very well, but I was able to get up front most of the motos. I had some good riding. I got second in the second race. It was a good day all in all, and we keep moving forward.”

In the SX1 Championship standings, Roczen leads the way with 122 points, followed by Craig with 95, Savatgy 83, Anderson 77 and Greg Aronda 46.
Roczen, however, confirmed that he’s not going to compete in the final two rounds in Sweden and South Africa, and his spot on the Pipes Motorsports Suzuki Team will be filled by Colt Nichols.

In the SX2 class, Max Anstie, on the Team GSM Yamaha, again dominated, winning all three races, finishing well clear of defending champ Shane McElrath on the Quad Lock Honda.
Third overall on the night was MotoConcepts Honda’s Cullin Park, followed by Rick Ware Racing Yamaha’s Coty Schock and Venum Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Cole Thompson.
Anstie, perfect so far, enjoys a comfortable lead in the SX2 class with 135 points to Schock’s 107. McElrath is third on 95 points.CN
