Rounds eight and nine of the AMA Arenacross Championship were held in Reno, Nevada, for a doubleheader weekend January 31-February 1. After four main events, points leader Vince Friese came away with both overall wins.
Vince Friese (66) swept the Arenacross doubleheader weekend in Reno.
Friese’s MotoConcepts teammate Ryan Breece was the man to beat in Friday night’s round seven. Breece set the fastest time of the race and made back-to-back passes early in the main event to go from third to first. Unfortunately for him, he was later docked two spots for jumping on a medical flag. This penalty put Friese into first place, with Michael Hicks taking second.
Main two saw Friese get the start and run up front again. Despite a hard charge from Breece, Friese retained the lead by just under a second. The two Hondas crossed the line first and second, with Austin Politelli rounding out the podium. Hicks’ 2-4 beat Politelli’s 4-3 for third on the overall podium.
The second night of racing saw more of the same, with Friese, Breece and Hicks battling at the front of the pack. The two MotoConcepts Honda riders faced off in the opening main with less than one second separating them from start to finish. Friese opened the night with the win while Breece followed him in for a close second-place finish.
In the second race, the two teammates went at it again, dropping the third-place rider, Politelli, by more than five seconds. Friese again set the fastest lap of the race and somehow managed to hold off Breece. They crossed the line with less than a second of separation. Friese’s 1-1 gave him the advantage over Breece’s 2-2 and Politelli’s 4-3.
Friese continues to lead the overall standings by 26 points over Hicks as the series heads to Prescott, Arizona, for rounds 10 and 11 on February 7-8. CN
