The Then Three-Time World Champ Won a Moto and Finished Second Overall at the LA Coliseum
In this week’s Throwback we travel back to June of 1974 and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum which hosted that year’s Superbowl of Motocross. Looking back to this race, nearly a half century ago, is appropriate this week since the SuperMotocross World Championship Final will be held in that same stadium this Saturday, Sept. 23. The Coliseum has a rich history of Supercross, or what was once called stadium motocross, dating back to 1972 and the event that paved the way for constructed, stadium-based motocross events, the ‘72 race held in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, promoted by Mike Goodwin, and won by 16-year-old Marty Tripes. In the 1974 event DeCoster won the third of the three motos and finished runner up to Czech racer Jaroslav Falta.
