Throwback Thursday: Broc Glover Wins San Diego Arenacross
In this week’s Throwback we dial back the clock 35 years to August of 1984 and the San Diego Arenacross held in the San Diego Sports Arena (now known as Pechanga Arena). This Mitch Friedman photo shows the podium for the 125cc Main that night with Broc Glover (wearing Miller hat) taking the win ahead of Suzuki riders runner up Mark Barnett (right) and a sullen looking Scott Burnworth (left) who finished third.
It was a good night for Glover, who was racing in front of a home crowd of 9700 fans. He also won the 250cc class, again over Barnett.
We think of Arenacross emerging later in the 1980s, but there were occasional arena motocross races across the country before then, such as this race, that served as templates for the scaled down version of Supercross, with Arenacross mostly held in basketball and hockey arenas versus football and baseball stadiums. This 1984 event was the first ever mention of the term “Arenacross” in the pages of Cycle News West.
