Throwback Thursday: AMA Supercross Visits NASCAR Country
In this week’s Throwback we dial the time machine back 23 years to 1996 and the 13th round of 15-race AMA Supercross Series. In mid-April of that year Supercross came to epicenter of NASCAR country when it visited the Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina. What greeted riders was the largest Supercross track ever constructed to that point. It measured over a mile-and-a-half. Nearly 32,000 fans gathered for the historic event and saw a track muddied by hours of rain preceding that evening’s race program. Getting the holeshot here in the main is Jeremy McGrath on his 1-800-Collect/Honda/Fox CR250. McGrath won the race that night in Charlotte ahead of Larry Ward and Kevin Windham. You can see the intensity in McGrath’s eyes as he negotiates the first corner of the long Charlotte Supercross track. Following MC through the turn are Mike Brown (No. 9), Larry Ward (No. 6), Phil Lawrence (No. 13), Ryan Hughes (No. 5), Doug Henry (No. 15), Brian Swink (No. 23), Greg Albertyn (No. 16), Mike Jones (No. 49), Buddy Antunez (No. 22) and others.
