Kawasaki Teammates Eddie Lawson and David Aldana Had a Great Battle

In this week’s Throwback we take it back to April of 1980 and that year’s AMA Superbike race at Talladega Super Speedway (then called Alabama International Motor Speedway). After heavy rain and flooding on Sunday, the race was moved to Monday. A number of racers went home and a thin field of 19 riders raced in front of empty grandstands and a skeleton officiating crew. Nevertheless, the race ended up being a great battle between the two Kawasaki factory entries of David Aldana (109) and Eddie Lawson (21). Lawson drafted past Aldana just before the finish line to score the victory. This shot shows the start of the race with Roberto Pietri (88 ), Wes Cooley (34), Aldana and Lawson, Steve McLaughlin (83), Freddie Spencer (8) and the rest of the field blasting off the line.
