Throwback Thursday: 1974 Talladega Battle for Podium
In this week’s Throwback we wind back the clock 44 years to August of 1974 and a great last lap AMA Combined Expert/Junior road race battle at Alabama International Motor Speedway (now known as Talladega Superspeedway). Hall of Fame AMA Starter Duke Pennell waves the white flag indicating one lap to go, as Ron Pierce (97), Pat Evans (41) and Ted Henter (12) speed down Talladega’s front tri-oval straight. Kenny Roberts had already cleared out and would take the victory, but this trio was battling for the remaining podium positions. In a hectic final lap Henter moved up and nipped Pierce to finish second. Evans ended up finishing just out of the winners’ circle in fourth. What was then the AMA Expert/Junior Combined would eventually become the AMA 250cc Grand Prix Championship.
